Cloudwell Cabin

above the Blue Ridge Mountains

here.
The most recent wildlife event was the return of hundreds of migrating mourning doves to our woods.

A High-Altitude Haven atop the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Hand-milled and designed with solitude in mind, Cloudwell Cabin is our everyday home. Its north-facing deck offers a spectacular panorama of the valley below. where morning fog often settles and swells like a cauldron in the cooler months.

The log cabin was an abandoned shell, open to the wilderness, for six years. It was purchased and completed by Andy and Ash in December, 2020.

We welcome friends to indulge in breathtaking views and not-quite-luxury amenities in our home above the clouds.

Guest Rooms

Get a room with a view in our cabin's two guest rooms, each outfitted with plush textiles and king-sized beds. Positioned on separate floors, they offer full-suite privacy for a peaceful night's sleep.

First Floor

The Primary Suite

Located on the cabin's main floor, this elegant room features a luxurious king bed, a cozy wool and silk rug, and a minibar for your convenience. The canopy bed is a work of art entirely hand-forged by master blacksmiths. It was added to the property in 2022, when the room was converted to a guest room. A sliding glass door to the deck, while frustratingly nonfunctional, does provide a lovely view into the valley below.

The Primary Suite features an adjacent, completely private bathroom. It's arrangement is suitable for couples or solo visitors, featuring a double vanity, walk-in shower with dual rainheads, and heated towel rack. Hampers are provided for laundry service.

The adjoining bathroom features a double vanity atop an custom pure copper countertop, and is equipped with a single tub/shower. The bathroom is a Jack-and-Jill format and can be closed off completely to the public part of the house for privacy.

Preview Your Stay

The transition to cabin life was not simple: if we were going to leave Logan Circle, it had better be worth it.

So we traded the Thai place next door for three freezers, the Studio Theater for a view of the mountains. Boot camp class became a virtual reality gym. Our favorite dive bar morphed into the upstairs tabletop-game lounge. Summer nights at le Diplomat are remembered at our heated outdoor bistro tables.

We didn't really leave DC. We took all of our favorite parts with us. Even our dining table, an oval slab of marble mounted to an iron vintage sewing table base, is a stolen idea from our favorite table-for-two in the neighborhood.

Your journey here mirrors our own, requiring a departure from the convenient comforts of city life. Like us, we're confident you'll discover the journey to be worthwhile.

Sample Menus

Whether it's brunch on the main deck or cocktails and board games in the upstairs bar, we take delight in serving a variety of tasty provisions. Explore our sample menus and let's see what sounds good to you!

Experiences

Urban nightlife is out of reach, as are movie theaters, museums, and distilleries. For visitors who wish to see as well as do, we offer a growing list of optional activities.

Amenities

Our goal for the cabin is to infuse everyday life with the tranquility of a private resort, with none of the drawbacks. Take a moment to unwind by the fire or marvel at the stars through the telescope -- if you can ever leave the hot tub, of course.

Things to know

There's some stuff we tell everybody, like how to find the cabin or what to pack to have your best hot tub experience. If you're an overthinker like Ash, this list is for you.

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods / There is a rapture on the lonely shore /.../I love not Man the less, but Nature more.”

Lord Byron

Patron Saint of Cloudwell

The hilly, poor soil of this part of Appalachia is exceptional for Christmas tree farmers.
